Climate and Soil Requirements
- Mangosteen grows best in tropical climates with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 40°C (68°F to 104°F). It favors humid environments with well-distributed annual rainfall of around 2000 mm or more.
- Ideal soil types are well-drained sandy loam or laterite soils rich in organic matter, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 5.5 to 6.5.
- The plant can be grown from sea level up to elevations of about 500 meters.
- Mangosteen trees require partial shade during the early stages and can tolerate full sunlight as they mature.
- Trees prefer sheltered spots protected from strong winds and salt spray.
Planting and Propagation
- Mangosteen is propagated mainly through seeds or grafting. Seeds should be fresh and planted soon after extraction, as they lose viability quickly.
- Seedlings take about 2 years to become ready for transplanting.
- Space trees approximately 7-8 meters apart in pits measuring about 0.6m x 0.6m x 0.6m enriched with organic manure.
- Planting is best done after the monsoon onset, usually between June and July.
Care and Maintenance
- Regular watering is essential, especially during dry months. Water young trees daily with approximately 10-20 liters per tree, decreasing as the tree matures.
- Mulching with grass or dried leaves helps conserve soil moisture.
- Use organic fertilizers such as farmyard manure combined with balanced NPK fertilizers according to tree age—for example, start with about 100 g NPK in the first year and increase gradually.
- Prune suckers and maintain canopy shape to encourage good air circulation.
- Manage pests and diseases by applying Bordeaux paste on trunk cankers and using recommended sprays for twig blight.
