What is Mothiravalayam?

• Mothiravalayam, also known as “ringing” or “girdling,” involves making a shallow circular cut (ring) around the trunk of a mango tree, typically near the base.
• This is done using a sharp knife or tool, making sure to cut through the bark but not so deep that it damages the wood inside.
• The process interrupts the downward flow of starches and sugars from the leaves, concentrating them above the ring, which stimulates flowering and fruit set.

How to Do Mothiravalayam

• Choose mature but non-fruiting mango trees, usually after 5 or more years of growth without fruiting.
• Use a clean, sharp knife to make a single circular cut around the trunk’s bark, about 1-2 cm wide and just deep enough to remove the outer bark layer, not cutting into the wood.
• Make sure the cut is complete and connects all the way around, but avoid girdling too deeply.
• Best done after the monsoon season, in the branching area just above the soil.
