Organic manure pesticide for spinach

1. Climate and Soil:

  • Spinach grows well in mild temperature conditions and can be cultivated throughout the year in such climates. It tolerates frost better than many vegetables but high temperatures may cause early bolting and reduce yield.
  • The ideal soil for spinach is well-drained, fertile sandy loam with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Neutral soils provide the best yield and leaf quality.

2. Land Preparation:

  • Plough the field 5-6 times to make the soil soft and fine tilth.
  • Level the land and remove any weeds.
  • Add micronutrients based on soil testing if needed.
  • Prepare beds and irrigation channels.

3. Seed Propagation and Sowing:

  • Spinach is usually grown from seeds.
  • Soak seeds in water overnight before sowing to enhance germination.
  • The seed rate varies: around 15-20 kg/ha for winter crops and 30-40 kg/ha for summer crops.
  • Sowing can be done by broadcasting or preferably by line sowing with 25 cm spacing between lines and thinning plants to 5 cm apart within the line. This facilitates weeding and harvesting.
  • The main sowing season in plains is late August to mid-November; in hilly areas, sowing is from March to May.

4. Manure and Fertilizers:

  • Use 25 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure per hectare.
  • Apply 90 kg Nitrogen and 30 kg Phosphorus (P2O5) per hectare.
  • Apply the entire farmyard manure and phosphorus and half of the nitrogen dose during land preparation.
  • Apply the remaining nitrogen in two split doses after each harvesting/cutting.

5. Irrigation:

  • Irrigate immediately after sowing.
  • Subsequent irrigation every 3-4 days in summer and 6-8 days in winter.
  • Rainy season crops may require less irrigation.

6. Intercultural Operations:

  • Perform 3-4 hoeing sessions and manual weeding to control weeds and loosen soil for aeration.

7. Pest and Disease Management:

  • Use resistant varieties if available.
  • Treat seeds and avoid planting in infected soils.
  • Control aphids by pruning or using tolerant varieties.
  • Avoid water stress and rotate crops to minimize pest problems.

8. Harvesting:

  • Ready in about 4-5 weeks after sowing.
  • Subsequent harvesting can be done every 20-24 days.
  • Harvest early morning when dew is present.
  • Clean and grade leaves before marketing.
